AS/NZS 1221:1997, Fire hose reels.

What are the Australian Standards for fire hose reel compliance?

Under AS 2444, fire hose reels must be selected and located to combat Class A risks. System installation must strictly comply with AS/NZS 1221, while ongoing maintenance, routine testing intervals, and annual fire safety certifications must be executed in accordance with AS 1851.

This section provides a detailed, usable breakdown of AS/NZS 1221:1997, Fire hose reels. This is the manufacturing standard that defines what a compliant fire hose reel is. Understanding this standard is essential for procurement, as it ensures the product you are buying is legal and fit for purpose.

Scope and Status

  • Full Title: AS/NZS 1221:1997, Fire hose reels.

  • Current Status (for 2026): This standard was formally “Reconfirmed” in 2020. This means it has been reviewed and affirmed as the current, valid standard for manufacturing.

  • Scope (What it Covers): The standard specifies the minimum “requirements for design, construction and performance” for all new fire hose reels. It applies to both “fixed” and “swing arm” type reels designed to be used by a single operator.

  • Exclusions (What it DOES NOT Cover): The standard’s scope explicitly states that it “does not include requirements for location or maintenance of fire hose reels”. Those requirements are detailed in AS 2441 (Installation) and AS 1851 (Maintenance), respectively.

Design and Construction Requirements

This section of the standard dictates the physical “build” of the reel and its components.

Component Clause AS/NZS 1221 Requirement
Hose 2.2.1

The hose must be a semi-rigid, non-kinking type. The standard size in Australia is 19mm nominal diameter and 36 metres in length. The hose is typically black or yellow and must be UV-stabilized.

Nozzle 2.2.2

Must be a twist-type operator-controlled nozzle. It must be made of a durable, corrosion-resistant material, such as brass or an approved polymer.

Reel (Drum) 2.2.3

The side plates of the reel must be made of a durable material (e.g., mild steel or polypropylene) and be painted or pigmented “Signal Red”.

Inlet Pipe & Valve 2.2.4 & 2.2.7

The reel must be supplied with a DN25 (25mm) ball valve. A critical design feature is the nozzle interlock. This mechanism locks the nozzle in place, and on manual reels, it is often integrated with the valve to prevent the hose from being run out until the water valve has been turned on.

Fittings 2.2.5

Must be supplied with all necessary components for assembly, including a wall-mounting bracket and a hose guide.

Cabinets 2.3 If a reel is supplied within a cabinet, the cabinet itself must meet design requirements, such as ensuring the door can be opened easily and does not obstruct the reel’s operation.

Performance Requirements (The Pass/Fail Tests)

This section details the mandatory tests a manufacturer must perform to certify their product. These tests prove the reel is durable and will function correctly under pressure.

  • Resistance to Internal Pressure (Clause 3.2.1 / Appendix B): The entire hose reel assembly (hose, drum, fittings) must be hydrostatically tested to withstand high pressure without leaking or failing.

    • Maximum Working Pressure: 1200 kPa or (12 bar).

    • Hydrostatic Test Pressure: 1700 kPa (17 bar) or higher.

  • Strength Tests (Clause 3.2.2 / Appendices C & D): The reel must be physically robust.

    • Side Plate Test (Appendix D): The reel’s side plates are tested to ensure they resist distortion under force. They must not permanently deform by more than 5mm.

    • Load Test (Appendix C): A swing-arm reel assembly must be strong enough to support a specified load without failing.

  • Unwind Test (Clause 3.2.3): To prove it can be used by “one operator,” the hose must unwind freely. The test specifies that the initial pull force required to unwind the hose must not exceed 100 Newtons

  • Discharge Tests (Clause 3.2.4 / Appendices E & F): This is the critical hydraulic performance test.

    • Flow Rate (Appendix E): This is the product capability test. The reel assembly (with its supplied hose and nozzle) must be capable of achieving a minimum discharge of 0.33 \Litres per second (19.8 L/min) at a specified nominal inlet pressure of 220 kPa} (Note: This is different from the AS 2441 installation test, which confirms this flow rate is achieved on-site).

    • Dispersal Test (Appendix F): The nozzle must be proven to produce both an effective, coherent “JET” stream and a dispersed “SPRAY” pattern, as defined by the test parameters in the standard.

Mandatory Marking and Identification

This section is the most practical part of AS 1221 for a business owner, as it provides the visual cues for verifying a product’s compliance. A reel that does not have these markings is not compliant.

  • On the Nozzle (Clause 4.2): The nozzle itself must be clearly and permanently marked to indicate its operation. This must include:

    • Direction of operation to the “OFF” position.

    • The “JET” position.

    • The “SPRAY” position.

  • On the Hose Reel (Clause 4.3): One or both side plates of the reel must be permanently marked with the following information:

    • The manufacturer’s name or trademark.

    • The Standard it complies with: AS/NZS 1221.

    • The year of manufacture.

    • The nominal hose diameter and length (e.g. 19mm  x 36m ).

    • The maximum working pressure (e.g., “1200 kPa)

  • Operating Instructions (Clause 4.3.3): Clear and legible operating and rewind instructions must be provided, typically on a plate or label in the center of the reel. For manual reels, this must include wording equivalent to “Turn on valve”.

  • Installation Instructions (Clause 4.6): The manufacturer must provide clear installation instructions with the product.
